An uncommon Snider lock made by Birmingham Small Arms & Metals on contract to the government of Portugal. The British government was not involved in the sale although Portugal was considered an ally and this sale caused quite a stir in the House of Commons. The lock is marked with the Portuguese crown over GP (Government of Porgugal) and BSA&M Co. over 1875. Only a small quantity of about 10,000 rifles were in the contract, making this a somewhat scarce item. Complete, working. Original smoothbore fowler, long lightweight barrel with original wooden ramrod including bone tip. Very ornate and highly figured wooden stock. Overall length 57 ½ inches, barrel is 42 inches, bore is 5/8 inch diameter or 20 gauge. The feature of this piece is the Miquelet lock with the external mainspring and sear mechanism. Bore is excellent. Some slight spalling of plated finish. Tip of hammer is broken off. Original leather lanyard and lanyard catch is broken. This was the private purchase sidearm of Lieut. Colonel Henry Burton Winter (1838 - 1915) of the 7th Royal Fusiliers. Served in Malta, Canada and finally India where he was Cantonment Magistrate at Poonamallee. Holster, belt and pouch are inscribed with his name and regiment. Also included is his Lt. Colonel's sash from the 7th Royal fusiliers. Very researchable.
