  3. BA1285 French Model 1842 Yataghan bayonet

    French Model 1842 Yataghan bayonet
Yataghan sword bayonet for use with the .71 caliber M1829/46 Artillery Carbine and others. This bayonet developed from the French Model 1840 and has a longer, heavier blade and steel crossguard instead of brass. The Model 1842 was replaced by the more common Chassepot 1866 bayonet. The Model 1842 resembles a much heavier version of that bayonet. A refinement of the world's first yataghan sword bayonet, the M1840, the M1842 had a longer, heavier blade and replaced the M1840's brass crosspiece with steel. The M1842 was a forerunner of the M1866. The M1842 blade is heavier than the M1866, as is the scabbard. Original good condition, blade is very good with no nicks on edge. Scabbard is rusted with minor dents near the tip. Made at Chatellerault Armoury in 1856.

  4. BA992 French Model 1842 Yataghan Sword Bayonet

French Model 1842 Yataghan Sword Bayonet
This heavy bladed yataghan sword bayonet was first developed as the French Model 1840 and is longer and heavier in the blade with the crosspiece made of steel instead of brass. Steel crossguard with quillon and cock’s comb above muzzle ring. There is a cursive “E” on the crossguard. Another “E” and a number located inside the mounting mortise on the back of the hilt. Date 1854 is stamped on the ricasso but no other markings on the back of the blade or elsewhere. Good condition, double fullered yataghan blade shows grey patina. No scabbard. Some of these bayonets were used in the US Civil war.
