Also with date of conversion date of 96, (1896). Scabbard is the uncommon Mk I model with 3 rivets in the front face. Very good condition, no separation of the leather and nicely marked. 19. BA571 Martini Henry 1853/71 early socket bayonet

Martini Henry 1853/71 early socket bayonet
This is the Pattern 1853 socket bayonet bushed for the Martini Henry rifle. Collectors of this interesting rifle know that the Martini Henry was rushed into service in 1871 at a time of fierce worldwide competition in the development of rifles. There was no purpose made bayonet for the Martini Henry until 1876. Between 1871 and 1876 transitional bayonets such as this were created to fit the rifle, making this a very interesting accessory for the Martini rifle or bayonet collector. Blade length is 17 5/8 inches. It is shorter than the 1876 pattern and the bushing sweated into the socket is evident. Complete with scabbard in good condition with stitching intact but wear to the brass chape. Blade is good with minor dings and a grey patina. Some spots of rust on the socket are pictured. This bayonet would have been used on the early Martini Henry rifles before the 1876 pattern was manufactured.
