BA1189 New Zealand Snider Artillery Carbine sawback bayonet RARE
Classified as "Ultra Rare" these Imperial issued Snider Artillery Carbine sawback bayonets were used by New Zealand in the 1870s and come in 3 versions which can be referenced in Skennerson's book British and Commonwealth Bayonets. This particular version is the Third Type, 18 inch blade BAR ON BAND model with the muzzle ring standing off the hilt. This bayonet was produced in Germany by Kirschbaum, Solingen and has the knight's head trademark on the ricasso. Rack marking L44 on crossguard. Blade is in very good original condition. This is the long bayonet, blade length 14 3/8 inches, overall 19 inches in length. Marked with Royal Cypher government acceptance mark and inspectors mark. Blade VG condition. Very nice Bavarian made 1898/05 bayonet by Fichtel & Sachs, nicely marked on ricasso and back of blade with Bavarian proof also on pommel and back of handle, Original blade, never a converted sawback, in VG condition. Polish converted these after World War I by replacing ribbed grips with smooth grips and adding a serial number to the ricasso. First pattern 1884/98 bayonet converted from earlier model 1871/84 by removing the muzzle ring and lengthening the slot to support a bayonet on the rifle without use of the muzzle ring. Black leather scabbard with bright steel mounting. No maker or regimental markings on bayonet or scabbard. Leather has shrunk over time so blade fit is very tight and only goes in as far as shown in photo.
